  • This researcher went to a pressure ulcer prevention forum and heard an occupational therapist speak on the topic of "sit on it". This forum reinforced the importance of pressure relief and how it affects the renal patient.

After discussions with company representatives for a pressure relieving cushion manufacturer it was found that there wasn't any cushions for the renal specific chairs currently in production.

As nurses do not have a "degree in foam" assistance was sought from the experts - the renal patients. From the patients input and trial of different devises the manufacturer have created a pressure relieving devise specifically for renal chairs which the patients are soon to trial.

This poster presentation will demonstrate the research process undertaken and discuss the outcome from the perspective of the renal patient.

    This research objectives were-
    1. To make the dialysis chair more comfortable for the patients
    2. To decrease the incidence of pressure ulcer development

    Method used -
Trial of pressure relieving devises manufactured for non dialysis chairs.

    Outcome-
Design and manufacture of a pressure relieving devise specifically for renal chairs which could extend to other areas where these chairs are also utilised.
Increased patient comfort impacting upon the patients dialysis experience allowing the patient to be more receptive to education without the "Numb bum" distraction.
